they will be bruising. none more than the hearing before the senate armed services committee over the new defense secretary, chuck hagel. the hearings could start as early as this week. the white house has mounted a vigorous defense. hagel says his record on iran, gays and the military has been distorted. members of the armed services committee will question hagel. but today on "face the nation," senator john mccain called hagel a friend, though he has questions and is annoyed at how the white house has handled the nomination. >> usually wprevious presidents, republican and democrat, when they are considering nominations, they call in the other side and the key members on the other party and say, hey, i am thinking about nominating mr. obama got an important buy-in you might say for his defense secretary nominee, chuck hagel, from the powerful new york senator chuck schumer. this morning schumer released a statement that reads in part, based on several key assurances provided by senator hagel, i am currently prepared to vote for his confirmation. i encourage my senate colleagues who have shared my previous concerns to also support him. well, this coupled with senator barbara boxer's vote of support yesterday has made his path for conformation look a lot easier. joining me is "the huffington post's" sam stein and "time" magazine's michael crowley. i thought schumer would take more time. got it on the record, maybe got a little more pro-hawkish than he was to start with the interview, but he got what he needed. i was impressed at the speed with which this is being done. your thoughts? >> i'm sort of with you on the one hand. it looked like schumer had legitimate concerns about what hagel's positions were with respect to iran and israel. then again, i thought about what was behind the act? in the end it was a demo

among them an those cabinet nominations including chuck hagel for secretary of defense, both democrats and republicans here still have a lot of questions about hagel and his views. they plan to ask those questions at the confirmation hearings. also congress has got to deal with the debt ceiling. we're hitting it yet again. sometime in mid-february, authorities believe. and this time it looks like republicans will be pushing for cuts and social will be on the table. finally, you mentioned vice president biden meeting today with cabinet members to finalize recommendations on guns including pushing for an assault weapons ban, but also what he said is a comprehensive approach to gun control. the nra and others don't believe in assault weapons ban can pass in congress. we'll get his recommendations tomorrow. >> thank you. >>> colin powell is speaking out on nbc's "meet the press" he endorsed chuck hagel to be the new defense secretary. he said hagel would do a great job at the pentagon. powell also fired harsh words at his own republican party. >> there's also a dark -- a dark vain of intol

have people recognize that when it comes to defense spending. some of the same people say we have to cut spending or complain that government jobs don't do anything, but when it comes to the defense contractor in their district, they think it is an important part of the economy in their district and that we should not stop spending on that. let's just make sure we're not spending on those other people. [no audio] my hope is that common sense prevails. that is always my preference. i think that would be the preference of the american people and it would be good for the economy. let me just repeat. if the issue is deficit reduction, getting our deficit sustainable over time, getting our debt in a sustainable place, then democrats and republicans in congress will have a partner in me. we could achieve that fairly quickly. we know what the numbers are and we know what needs to be done. we know what a balanced approach would take and we have done half of the deficit reduction we need to stabilize. there has probably been more pain and trauma in getting there than we needed. finishing t

to being secretary of defense. they are very close and i don't know that obama had a deep relationship with him, but there other ways in which his fingerprints are on the president's policies and afghanistan won the argument. two things here i would add on guns specifically. biden in a way is -- a messenger for obama and sectors that may not trust him. he's got working class roots from industrial pennsylvania. he's catholic. i guess that the white house sees him as a messenger to people who might be skeptical and have ideas of what obama's agenda is and that biden could be a better messenger on this. i hate to bring up the 2016 number, but i think you may see more opportunities for biden to step out and prove himself in his own standing if he wants to run for president. >> the one thing i would add is nobody understands personal tragedy and is able to speak to that in an emotional compelling way as joe biden. going back to what you were saying about very little hope of this package or really much of anything, passing it is republican house. what do you think the white house strategy is

've already made to priorities other than medicare, medicaid, social security and defense mean that we spend on everything from education to public safety less as a share of our economy than it has -- than has been true for a generation. and that's not a recipe for growth. so we've got to do more both to stabilize our finances over the medium and long term, but also spur more growth in the short term. i've said i'm open to making modest adjustments to programs like medicare to protect them for future generations. i've also said that we need more revenue through tax reform by closing loopholes in our tax code for the wealthiest americans. if we combine a balanced package of savings from spending on health care and revenues from closing loopholes, we can solve the deficit issue without sacrificing our investments in things like education that are going to help us grow. it turns out the american people agree with me. they listened to an entire year's debate over this issue, and they made a clear decision about the approach they prefer. they don't think it's fair, for example, to ask a senior to

's choice of chuck hagel for defense secretary. schumer said today the former republican senator has now addressed claims that he's anti- israel, among other things. california democrat barbara boxer also issued a statement of support. the backing of two prominent jewish senators is expected to help hagel ease concerns among other, pro-israel lawmakers. a major debt rating agency warned today the u.s. could lose its top credit status if there's a delay in raising the debt ceiling. the federal government is expected to exceed its borrowing limit by march, unless congress acts. if fitch does downgrade u.s. debt, it would join standard and poor's, which took that action in 2011 during the last debt ceiling debate. the u.s. house moved to pass a hurricane sandy relief bill this evening. $17 billion would go for immediate recovery in the affected northeastern states. another $33 billion is for long- term spending. some republicans argued that much of the money isn't for emergency relief at all. california's tom mcclintock called for stripping that funding out. >> according to the congressiona
